Victorian Under-20 and Ivor Burge team fixtures

WE ARE only a week away from the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge Championships tipping off in Gosford, NSW.

#TeamVic’s best and brightest will head our four teams heading away for the first national championship of 2018. Our Under-20 Women, Ivor Burge Men and Ivor Burge Women are defending their hard-earned national titles claimed last February in Bendigo, while the Under-20 Men have set their sights on regaining the national championship, after finishing third in 2017.

With a quartet of exceptional head coaches – Chris Anstey, Katrina Hibbert, Glen Jordan and Simon Robinson – assistant coaches and team staff, the four #TeamVic squads assembled have the best chance of aiming for the top of the podium.

At our recently held Basketball Victoria Under-20 and Ivor Burge Singlet Presentation Night, representatives of each team filled us in on how their sides are going in the lead up to the championships.

Ivor Burge Men’s assistant coach Jeff Shute said the side was dialed in and ready for the championships with a fantastic lead-in – especially its high-calibre sessions – starting to pay off.

“It’s a great group of coaches, boys and staff,” Shute said. “We’ve been working really, really hard and going through four hour sessions – which can take a toll on the players and coaches – but they’ve been working well and we’re looking forward to heading off to Gosford.”

Ivor Burge Women’s coach Simon Robinson said the key to the side’s success in Gosford is looking ahead and treating each game on its merit.

“The challenge for us is to not get complacent,” Robinson said. “We need to stay really, really hungry and keep improving.

“We have made big steps in recent months with the creation of Ivor Burge NITP squads –  it’s a really great step for the continued growth and sustainability of the programs.”

Under-20 Women’s assistant coach Hannah Lowe thought the strength of the tryouts across the board showed the incredible strength of the final Victorian squad.

“We had try outs late last year and I’ve been blown away by the standard of play at those tryouts, not just the girls who made the team, but those who just missed out,” Lowe said. “There’s a deep talent pool in Victoria and that’s something I’m proud to be a part of.

“We’ve now had a couple of weekends now to really pump out some great sessions before we head away.

“Expectations are really high being a Victorian team and seeing the Metro and Country teams coming together is exciting as we put our best foot forward together as one Victorian team.”

And last, but never least, our Under-20 Men’s coach Chris Anstey said the work-rate of the group will be professional as they look to make the most out of their opportunity in the #TeamVic singlet.

“Our preparation has been a little bit different – we realised how much these boys have had on since selection and we’ve been understanding that a lot of them had Year 11 and Year 12 exams… so we wanted to make sure when we got together we had the whole group,” Anstey said. “We recently had a four-and-a-half hours and three hours here practicing – as we want to treat them like pros.

“It’s a privilege to represent Victoria and it’s very special – representing our state over the years, there’s no guarantee you’ll represent the state again so it’s very special every time you are part of the team.”
