Basketball Victoria would like to extend its deepest sympathies to Sharon, Jordan, Caleb and Tanner, following the passing of husband and father, Damian Pyle on Sunday February 28.
The Gippsland basketball community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Damian, whose contribution to basketball was immeasurable, leaving a lasting mark on many young basketballers lives.
Damian had a passion and charisma that was infectious. You always knew when he was in a room by the sound of his laugh. He was passionate about providing the very best opportunities for young athletes to succeed and welcomed any opportunity to help promote the game.
A long-time contributor to Gippsland Basketball – Damian was President, Vice-President, Committee member and Coach at Latrobe City Energy and Coach at Traralgon Amateur Basketball Association. Alongside his wife Sharon, they spent many hours volunteering their time to progressing the Latrobe Energy Senior and Junior Programs. For 5 years Damian was also the assistant administrator for the local Basketball Victoria Regional Academy.
In 2019 and 2020, Damian worked alongside Basketball Victoria’s David Huxtable and Jodie Harlow, GippSport’s Michelle Harris, Latrobe Council’s Larry Sengstock and Latrobe Valley Authority’s Jenni Hardy on the Gippsland Elite Pathway Project, where his knowledge and input was crucial to advancing that project.
Damian and his family have been a part of the fabric of Gippsland Basketball for more than a decade. With his children progressing through the Basketball Victoria – Country Development Pathways and his daughter currently playing College (NCAA) basketball in the United States, Damian’s passion was junior athlete pathway progression.
His biggest passion was for his family, you could not walk away from a conversation with Damian without realising the immense pride and love that he had for Sharon, Jordan, Caleb and Tanner. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them at this time.
Damian Pyle, 11/3/1974 – 28/2/2021
