Bring Your Grandparent to Basketball!

Who do you think has more game? An Aussie Hooper or their grandparent? Well, now’s your chance to find out!

Next week is ‘Bring Your Grandparent Week’ which encourages Aussie Hoops participants to bring their grandparent (or senior if they don’t have a grandparent) to participate in the sport they love.

Various participating associations will run sessions from May 17 – 23 that will combine the best of Aussie Hoops and Walking Basketball.

The Walking Basketball program is aimed at engaging older Victorians of 65 years and beyond to be physically active in a safe environment.

Basketball Victoria’s Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Kathy Perry, urged the importance of bringing these two demographics together through a common love of sport.

“The purpose of the event is to promote the Walking Basketball program and, at the same time, provide a fun shared experience for the Aussie Hoopers and their grandparents or senior friend,” Perry said.

“The Walking Basketball program has both physical and social benefits by getting our participant’s bodies moving while enjoying the company of others during the game and after.”

Each session will be divided in half so that each demographic can show off their skills.

“The first half of a session will allow our Aussie Hoops kids to show their grandparent their form of basketball,” Perry explained.

“The second half will be a Walking Basketball game where the grandkids see how their grandparents or senior friend play. Walking is a must and physical contact a no!”

Sessions will end with a social celebration of morning or afternoon tea.

“This is an important part of the session as we want to highlight the social benefits of basketball and being a part of the basketball community.”
