Six Victorian referees will develop their officiating skills this week as they head to the Australian Under-20 Junior Championships and Ivor Burge Championships.
These Championships are not only home to showcasing the finest player talent across the nation, but recognise the potential of our emerging referees.
Sam Viergever, Brittany Andreola, Joshua Durand and Kaine Jeffries will referee the Under-20 Championship matches. They come with ample experience behind them, all a part of the NBL1 South referee panel for 2020. Viergever, Andreola and Durand also officiated at the 2019 Australian Under-18 Junior Championships in Townsville.
Stepping up to officiate the Ivor Burge Championships are Simonne Collins and Maddison Gordyn. For Collins, Canberra will mark her second opportunity to officiate at an Australian Junior Championship level after her first performance at the 2018 Under-14 Championships. This event is sure to be a prominent one for Gordyn’s development as her first Championship.
Basketball Victoria’s Technical Officials Manager Bill Mildenhall said this year’s selected referees have earned their spots through elite, consistent officiating across their games in 2019.
“These referees have been selected from a very competitive group of officials who have performed consistently over the 2019 VJBL season,” Mildenhall said. “Selection for National Championships is part of an official’s pathway for progressing through the officiating ranks.
“We anticipate that they will follow in the footsteps of many Victorian referees and perform extremely well at these Championships.”
The Australian Under-20 and Ivor Burge Championships will run from 5-9 February teams competing at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra.
