The 2013 Ivor Burge Victoria Metropolitan Women’s team that will contest the 2013 Ivor Burge Australian Championship has been selected. The Ivor Burge Championship is the national basketball championship for Players with an Intellectual Disability. The event is named after Australian basketball pioneer Ivor Burge to commemorate his contribution to basketball in Australia.

The weeklong tournament is conducted annually by Basketball Australia (in conjunction with the U20 Australian Championship) and attracts teams from across the country. Next Year’s Ivor Burge Championship will be held in Launceston, Tasmania from 17 – 23 February 2013.

Victoria Metropolitan is the reigning national champion in both the Ivor Burge women’s and men’s divisions. The inaugural Ivor Burge Championship was held in Wollongong in 1995. That first year Vic Metro won gold in both the Women’s and Men’s divisions and those teams have an unparalleled record of winning gold or silver every year since. The 2013 team is committed to continuing this great tradition of success.

Head Coach Lance Wright said: “Being part of the Ivor Burge Women’s team over the past three years has been a rewarding journey which, having built on the success of the program in the years prior, resulted in three hard fought championships. During this time we have also managed to rebuild our team, and now this season welcome Kate Leckenby into a young but very experienced team to defend our title. The most pleasurable part of working with this team is seeing the chemistry, camaraderie and personal sacrifice that each of these women have contributed for the good of the team. I believe that our team has the essential qualities and will again continue to put in the hard work required to represent Victoria with distinction in Launceston.”
